This painting is part of the plum, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum bamboo series. These 4 plants are the 'four gentlemen' in Chinese culture. They are much more than symbols for the 4 seasons, they represent the most noble character. Orchid, for instance, stands for staying firm and not breaking under harsh conditions.

The Chinese poem on the left is about a bamboo stick. The author uses it to walk in the high mountains and makes the wish that he can meet you above a sea of clouds.
